The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Role That Changed My Life
During the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.
We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.
Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.
He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.
The next day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.
As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.
I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.
I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.
Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
