'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She explained his targets were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.

The defendant played a "candy game" with the minors, Mrs Prior stated, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were settling down and tell them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and youngsters had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She said the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had worries in summer 2025.

The legal representative stated further: "Recently" his stepson had suspicions about what was going on, justifiably.

"They resolved" to have a look in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC said materials including baby oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were located, and his family member alerted the police about his concerns.

She stated Ruben went on to conduct the "candy game" with six boys that night - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.

"The police had not arrived by that point," she added.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.

The legal representative explained the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson called the authorities a second time.

She stated Ruben then played the "candy game" in a space of five minors.
