Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
